Mountain Brook's Secondary Teacher of the Year

Cathy Ivey, who has been selected as Mountain Brook's Secondary Teacher of the Year, has taught Chemistry at Mountain Brook High School since 1998. Her prior teaching experiences in Chemistry were at Shades Valley High School, Briarwood Christian High School, and the Alabama School of Fine Arts. She has taught part-time at both the University of Alabama-Birmingham and Birmingham Southern College. In addition to her active role with the Alabama and National Science Teachers Associations, Cathy has been a leader in the community. She developed a teacher workshop called "A Salute to African-American Scientists" which she has presented at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute since 1998. This fall she was recognized by the ING Northern Annuity with the Education's Unsung Heroes Award. One of the highlights each year comes when she takes her high school students to area elementary schools to perform chemistry labs with the younger students. Her education includes degrees and other advanced studies at the University of Alabama, UAB, Old Dominion University, the University of Minnesota, and Montevallo. She may be reached at iveyc@mtnbrook.k12.al.us.
